Class 2028 Waitlist

My DS was waitlisted at prep. Not the best outcome but he's still in the hunt. Would love any insights from prior years about how many might clear off the waitlist. Wishing everyone the best on this stressful day!

I was deferred in EA - but not turned down outright so that was a good sign, and I look at this the same way. It sounds like it will come down to whether or not the accepted cadets who are most similar to my profile accept or decline.

I have 3 excellent "Plan B" options in another academy acceptance, AFROTC and AROTC 4-yr scholarships, but the mission of the USCGA most closely aligns with my personal interests and goals.
Exceptional options all the way around! You’ve clearly done great work to have the different opportunities available to you, and based on whatever decision you ultimately make, it sounds like you will be successful. Good luck with the waitlist, or with any of the options you pursue!

For those who were waitlisted for USCGA: If you plan to reapply next cycle, consider applying EA. You will hear from some on this forum that college reapplicants have to apply during regular decision so the academy can see their first semester grades.... but I know of a college reapplicant who was waitlisted, reapplied during EA, and received an appointment during EA. Obviously you want to communicate with your AO and see what they recommend.... but just keep that in mind. The academy already sees you as qualified. Fingers crossed for all of you!!!

From USCGA...

Early Action

The Academy’s Early Action review group is non-binding. All applicants appointed in this group will still have until May 1st to accept or decline.
High school seniors and active duty military members are eligible for Early Action. Those attending college or a post-grad year are not unless they are first-time applicants.

Interesting. Well there were 3 USCGA early action appointments this year at Georgia Military College. I know for sure that two of them were not first time applicants. Not sure about the third. Like I said, I think communication with the AO is the best bet.

I think I read recently there were some special cases for waitlisters that reapplied, but I can't vouch for that. In the past the rule of thumb was what was written above: reapps couldn't go early. And I agree that communicating with Admissions Officers is always best when planning these things out.

At the very least arrange to have an AO review your app with you so you know how you got here and what it might take to move the needle next time. Don't be guessing at how to move forward when they are offering to walk you through things. It's an amazing offer, and if you are even remotely entertaining thoughts of reapplying you should take them up on it.

My DS received Waitlist for Appointment today, as well. Waiting on decision from USNA and NROTC.

CGA admissions team has provided invites to previous applicants from the waitlist authorizing them to reapply EA the following year. Don’t know the criteria, so would inquire with the AO to gain clarity. Best of luck to everyone still working towards a CGA appointment.

Hope they share some metrics so all waitlisted families can somewhat estimate their chances

There’s really no way to even guess as each admissions cycle is unique. It’s a moving target all the way up through May 1 which is the deadline for all service academy appointees to render their decisions. Then, it’s a matter of admissions filling in the various gaps from the waitlist. They’ll be looking for certain majors, sports, geographic area, etc to round out the class.

So if your son checks some of the boxes they happen to need, he’s may be in good shape. If he doesn’t, then at least he’s well positioned to move to plan B and have a good chance if he reapplies next year.

How many wait list applicants usually get in. I know someone probably did the research.

It varies heavily from year to year. In 2020 the took 0 from the waitlist. Other years I've numbers as high as 40.

There is no way possible to gauge odds of being pulled from the waitlist. It depends entirely on how many, and which, kids turn down the appointment. If your students ticks the same boxes they are looking for of someone who declined their appointment, they'll get in. If not, probably not.
