I am a current Freshman, Ik that varsity sports is something that is loved to be seen in one's application to USNA or any of the SA's. I currently do Wrestling (JV1) and Track(JV2). Instead of doing Track next year, to push for that Varsity Letter and a shot of making it to regionals/sectionals/state in wrestling (a sport I am fairly good at) I want to do Offseason and Preseason club wrestling in place of Track. Do admissions officers take into account non-school sports, and does really focusing in on one sport better help me than being subpar at several. Ik that it is better to be varsity in several sports, but if I do offseason for Wrestling, I am very likely to make team captain and win conference by my late junior/early senior year.

Input on this would be appreciated because this summer is when I really have to decide, because there are programs for both sports going on this summer and I have recieved varied advice from coaches and family. Thank you!

You can look at the class profile for each year and get a sense of what make-up people bring to the table. The vast majority of kids have varsity athletics on their resume. Like 90% range. And near 70% as team captains.

Yes, it is common to augment your high school schedule with club teams in the same sport so you can participate year-round rather than rotate through various sports in their traditional seasons. Just be sure to stay invested in your school community, find ways to lead in other areas of your life, and do well on your CFA to demonstrate that you're not just a one trick pony when it comes to physical activity.

I would guess most of the D1 athletes at USNA - and the country - play multiple sports. They weren’t subpar in any sport they played.

I would let the people in the know tell you how it affects your application. I suspect if you excel at wrestling and are a team captain - and show dedication preseason and offseason to get there - it wouldn’t necessarily hurt.

Remember - it’s a competition. Your competitors might obtain higher WPS by doing multiple sports.

Our daughter played MS/HS Lacrosse and she also travelled with a Club in HS (Summer/Fall) as well …

She found time to do HS XC as well … she worked it out with all the coaches …. That was her business … not sure how she could do it all with her Piano and Cello too

Oh … she was also in a Leadership roles for her 4-H Sheep Club and her NJROTC unit too …

It’s a lot, but you can do it …

Alright this is good to know, I have the other parts of the application down in knowing how I’m going to navigate that (Eagle scout, key club, honors society and student council) but really just was wondering about this aspect. I’ll probably end up doing offseason and preseason, based off of this advice, and strive to get team captain, and do very well on the CFA. I likely cant excel in both Track and Wrestling, so I'll just have to do better at wrestling and on the rest of my resume.

Being a team captain is nice, but usu only one person or two are captains at one time (One chief and the rest are braves). Best to strive for the letter and if you can letter in 2 sports (or more) the better, IMO. I would continue with track as it will help you be better prepared when you get to the academy with its emphasis on running.

Pick the path that you most enjoy and then work hard. Both paths you mention here will need the same if you push yourself. I would think majoring in wrestling and with a minor in track is a path that leads to a great experience.
