NROTC Marine Option not accepted question

I had a question about the NROTC Marine Option Scholarship.

For me personally, results were just released, and unfortunately I was unable to secure the national scholarship during this second board, but I did have a question about it.

Obviously, not everyone who receives the scholarship to go to certain schools will actually go to those schools, or even activate the scholarship at all, as some also will receive appointments possibly to the NA and some may choose to opt out entirely. How does the Marine Corps handle this? Are those spots just kinda given up and not handed to anyone else, or do those spots get handed to the next person in line, If so, is there any way to know if we have a chance and are in the running to receive this scholarship in the event someone who received it for whatever reason chooses not to activate it?

Thanks ahead of time!

I believe that if you received a NO, then your board score wasn't high enough to place you in a position on the waitlist that will eventually earn a scholarship. Some candidates that are on the waitlist will receive a scholarship when the winners decline for Service Academies, other ROTC branch, or just decline for personal reasons. I encourage you to choose a school you can afford and sign up as a college programmer.

That's another problem, for me, It says three things when checking the website

first, that my online application has been submitted

two, that my application was not selected for a scholarship

but then third is confusing me, it says right after that my application is at the Marine Corps District for Board selection, is this an error and not supposed to be there? because I haven't recieved any emails directly confirming or denying me, only that I was not selected, but then it says that right after, and it's very confusing for me.

Check with your Marine District OSO on your status. Remember that Marine Option are chosen by district, and you may have more pull if you attend a school in your district. Choose a school assuming no scholarship. Then check with staff at that school, and see what your options are, and what you need to do.

@Tusk My DS was in the same boat in 2019 after the second board. DS asked the OSO (Officer Selection Officer) about an "Alternates List" and was told that there was no NROTC-MO alternate's list and that USMC would make up any short-term gaps in officer recruiting via OCS. That was four years ago and things may have changed. Your DS's OSO will be best source of current information.

There are still opportunities for your DS to commission USMC -- 3-year NROTC-MO Scholarship / Advance Standing NROTC-MO / PLC program / OCS after college. Lots of great posts about the grit and determination it takes to commission -- some of the very best posts are by everyone's old friend @Devil Doc (who posted prolifically through 2022).

Yep, Thanks for the info, I'm trying to get in touch with the MOI at Norwich to see if I can apply for the college program so I can still go to NSI this summer, then pursue the 3-year MO Scholarship, Wish me luck!

Sounds like a great plan -- please keep us up to date on what you learn. Good luck!

Keep the faith, I would highly suggest trying for college programer then pursue scholarship once in the NROTC unit. Many many more people chose this option than is talked about on this forum; a lot more common than you'd think. Best of luck

Best of luck! I'm doing the same thing right now for CU. One of my friends is a Marine Option at Norwich, and I believe she really likes it there.
