I'm applying to USAFA through the LEAD program and I was wondering if anyone knows or is someone who is attending USAFA/USAFAPS? I was wondering what their status was when they applied (SAT/ACT, high school GPA, college?, leadership roles, CFA, etc...). I'm really hoping to attend USAFA or the prep school but I want to see how I compare to those prior enlisted that got accepted in the previous years. Thank you!

So here goes a crazy long post. I am applying for the LEAD Program as well. My application was pretty much complete in July, but I had to wait on some minor things in order to get everything submitted. I have been lurking on these forums, reddit, and the Air Force Academy Admissions website for several months.

The simple answer to your question: it really doesn't matter your scores, leadership, etc. as the Academy looks at the Whole Candidate Score which is out of 600. How the Academy weighs each category? No one truly knows.

All the basic averages are on the admissions website or on the 2018 class profile. While speaking to my ALO, before I applied, he advised that Enlisted Airmen are in a class of their own as far as competition. That being said, you may not only be competing against me or Amn Snuffy, you are also competing with Academy standards.

There is a pretty well known prior enlisted who was direct appointed last year. I believe his name is WinstonWolfePF on here and on reddit. His scores and stats are posted on both sites for your comparison. However, remember the Whole Candidate Score and some piece of your life could affect your application weighting differently than his. The basics must be met though, ACT/SAT averages, CFA averages, GPA averages as this shows the Academy that you can handle the rigourous course work and fitness.

I know that was a lot of information and I have just gathered that by reading these forums. I have a Lead Program thread on this page with a Prep-Schooler who is open to questions. I am also open to any questions you may have.

Message me if need be!

First, thank you for actually doing to research before hand!!!!
This shows that you are motivated and worked out the problem before posting here.

I believe that for prior enlisted, the scores are not as highly weighed because we have been out of school for a good 2-5 years and the ACT/SAT is meant to be taken in High school. I would still try to get the highest scores possible but as long as they meet the marks, you will be fine. Getting a great recommendation letter is half the battle for prior enlisted Airman and if you can't take the ACT any more, than focus on that.

If you are already finished with you application than great but remember that you are still an Airman right now. DO NOT throw you career away for a CHANCE to go to the Academy. Study for your CDCs, WAPs, College Finals, QA inspections, etc, etc... I believe that if you focus on getting things done at work, the time will go by faster. At this point I do not log in to my portal unless I get an email from the Academy first. I have gone from thinking I have a good shot to thinking I am never going to get in but the ball is not in my court so there is nothing I can do.

The point is that April is really not too far away and waiting can suck at times but just remember the saying, Hurry up and Wait.

Please PM me if you have any questions, I have also completed my application back in October.

Sincerely,

Empire

I wouldn’t worry too much at all; USAFA has a certain number of slots for priors that are never used up. One of my classmates is a prior/preppie, has an ACT superscore of 23 and he’s at the academy. If you have good recommendations, you’ll be fine. Don’t stress.

Hello!

I am prior who went through lead and is currently at the prep school. I would be happy to answer any questions!

What was your ACT/SAT scores when you applied? Also, were you in many leadership positions as an Airman?
