I got an email asking parents to support a bill to reach full-funding for USMMA (Anyone know what thats about?) and a few posts on this forum about how the Academy seems to be falling apart or at least with low quality of life especially compared to the other academies. What I'd like to know is the food really as bad as people say? Is mold an issue within the rooms? Is the academy really in as bad of a state as I've heard? A lot of this information I read is quite old, have they done much in recent years like renovation etc.? Thanks.

I attended Flying Bridge Day this past Friday 26 April. There was also the Annual Chapter Presidents meeting on Saturday 27 April. Our local Chapter President has shared his notes with me.

In both of these events there was a Midshipmen Panel discussion in which numerous mids could be quizzed on their likes, and more importantly their dislikes. A common "dislike" mentioned in both meetings is mold in barracks, not working hot water (2nd Company routinely has to go to other buildings to shower), no heat in the winter (3rd company) and other related comments.

The two meetings have been timely and caused these comments to become a matter of significance. Quoting from Highlights from the Hill

USMMA AAF Infrastructure Advocacy Continues to be Full Speed Ahead

In the House of Representatives, Congressman Andrew Garbarino (NY-2) has introduced legislative language to authorize a multi-year appropriation to effect a much needed and comprehensive modernization of the entire USMMA campus infrastructure and facilities. The language has been shared with the members of the USMMA Board of Visitors (BOV) as well as members of the House Armed Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over USMMA. Garbarino is currently seeking multiple co-sponsors and the goal is to get this language into the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). In the Senate, Sen. Mark Kelly (AZ), Chair of the USMMA BOV and a 1986 USMMA graduate, is spearheading a similar effort. The independently authored and USMMA AAF endorsed infrastructure plan, the Full Speed Ahead plan, continues to be well received in Congress as a viable roadmap for rehabilitation of the USMMA campus. Of note, Congressman Garbarino was successful in having the Full Speed Ahead Plan introduced into the Congressional Record on Feb. 28, 2024.

Of importance is that Congressman Garbarino would like to have support by his colleagues by May 1st. So if you can, please take a moment to write you local congressman and encourage them to support Congressman Garbarino in his efforts to get multi-year funding to improve the Academy infrastructure.

I was quite fond of Elephant Scab night(Chicken parm) while I was at Club Shangri La. I heard it was still on the menu.

Hah! My DS, Class of 2027, just sent me this picture of his Delano Hall dinner a few nights ago. I told him it looked like slices of elephant foot1000000617.jpg

My son is a 3/C and an Alumni Liaison. You probably crossed paths with him, he had a great time hearing from alumni. He especially enjoyed being able to attend the event at the Mariner Estate.

Three 3/C joined us for dinner at the Mariner Estate. Perhaps your DS was one of them. All these mids are impressive.

It's May 8th but I'll write to my MOC right now.

I remember when they upgraded the tables and chairs my senior year and it was a big change. Food though remained the same though.

That meal was deceptively good, it just happened to look like that. But 9/10 porkchops are inedible that is for sure.
Are elephant scabs(Chicken Parm) still on the menu? Those were actually good. Used to have an ice cream bar with all the fixins and a pretty decent salad bar. PB&J was always on the tables too.

I'm actually quite excited to see what KP's food has to offer. Since I live in Korea my current high school pretty much only servers Korean food, I think I'll be overjoyed with anything KP has haha!

Its not that bad and the food on commercial ships is quite good. You'll see during sea year. ie Sunday is prime rib day by contract with some of the unions.

Chicken parm is every once in a while, it's pretty solid as well. Desserts rotate, so sometimes we have an ice cream bar. But that is like once a month. Normally is cookie/brownie/cake/pie, or some variation of those 4.

Don’t expect any bulgogi until perhaps sea year.
