USAFA Waiting Page C/O 2028

DS just checked the portal and there it was... Appointment to USAF Prep Program 2028! We were not expecting this as he has no nomination yet ! Some big decisions to come because he was just awarded a 4 yr ROTC a few weeks ago and had started to settle into this decision. No complaints from this mom...hard decisions are good to have. Blessed.
I don't believe you need a nomination to attend prep school, but congratulations! I had no idea they appointed people to prep school this early, I always thought that was toward the end of the cycle in March - April.

Congrats! How does it show? Something replaces the Candidate Kit-Submitted line?
It said Decision is Ready on the portal, and when this was clicked a big letter opened up. Totally unexpected since there was no other notification on email, phone, or mail so far.

My son asked me to "chill" LOL. He already received Type 1 AFROTC HSSP. He is set on USAF whether AFA or AFROTC. I guess I am more excited than him! Go Air Force!!
Just make sure all the DODmerb is complete for both. That can DQ and take away the scholarship if he doesn't have all 3 check marks.

My DS is triple qualified already. Medically qualified since July. Passed CFA last Sep. SAT score of 1400 last May.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this here, but congratulations to everyone who has received an appointment so far! I don't intend this statement to undermine anyone's hard work, just an observation. These all seem to less competitive states as far as I can tell, do you think admissions may be more likely to appoint presidentially or DAV from less competitive states, whereas they have a stronger preference to appoint congressionally from large states? Again, congratulations to everyone!

These appointment threads are tiny data slices. No way to do any kind of meaningful analysis. Presidentials and other service-related are not geographically tied. Candidates with multiple noms will likely never know where their appointment was actually charged. That can stay very fluid until cycle end.

Admissions has decades and decades of experience in class-building, figuring out which candidates they want and solving the Tetris-like puzzle of which nom source to charge as they go.

And yes, ideally appointment threads focus on actual appointments. Enjoy speculative posts here:

You also have to remember that this is just a small cross section of the larger applicant/appointee and community pool so doesn't necessarily represent all the states equally or evenly. Just interesting to see the appointments as they come through and to offer congratulations to those in the group who have made the next step.

I didn't list my state for some reason when I posted, but I'm in Colorado which is definitely not less competitive for USAFA at least. One of my friends from Summer Seminar received a USNA appointment from the DMV as well. I do think it's more just the smaller group that you'd have here, but I know nothing about the mysteries of selection at service academies.

Gotta be honest - my biggest question at this point is did EVERYBODY get that LOI/LOE? It seemed like such a big deal at the time but it seems at though it was sent out to everyone who had an app completed. Thoughts?
My DS is 3Q since Sep but no LOI/LOE/LOA yet. We are from VA so I don't know if its play a part on this. DS finished interview with Sen and Congressman. Hopefully before January we'll hear the results of the nomination. Anyone from VA who got LOI/LOA/LOE under MOC noms?

Hang in there mama! I feel for you as a parent of what you are going through right now and understand! My roller coaster of emotions had to do with my som needing a medical waiver during COVID times.

Look forward and don’t worry about what has passed. If your son ends up going to prep school or a year in college and has to reapply that’s ok!

We have amazing cadets who gained appointments after another year of maturity and experience!

Good luck to your son and to all of the 2028 candidates!
Totally agree with nj2025 about extra year. My oldest DS went to USAFA Prep School and it did him the world of good and he absolutely loved it there as well as making all kinds of friends. My youngest went in direct so they are now both in the same class at USAFA and the Prep School friends of the older brother helped the younger brother get through BCT more easily than might have otherwise been the case. I also feel your stress as the youngest got put on the USNA waitlist, denied by USAFA (no available spots), then put on the USAFA waitlist, declined at USNA then accepted at USAFA all within a couple of weeks. Rollercoaster nightmare for the poor kid and us as parents. In the end it all worked out one way or another. Good luck.

Just swinging by to say waiting is STILL hard! 😂

Nom interviews were completed during the first week of December and unless something changes this year, we won’t hear about noms until January. Though, that doesn’t stop me from wishing DS would check his portal a bit more frequently! 🙃

Trying to reign it in and focus on Christmas!

For the record, there is a LOT more to the third/academic "Q" then the SAT scores. You really don't know
that you are "Q" unless Admissions tells you that you are.
Q for academic, will that show up in the portal? How will one know if you are Q in Academic? A strong SAT is definitely a plus as per all the admission briefings we attended. My DS got 760 in Math which I think is a great score especially for Technical Major.
