Son was asking if he should consider his school choices as he’s getting rolled over to the 2nd Board for Army ROTC & NROTC.

He’s been accepted Early Action at 2 schools (1 state school & 1 SMC) that were on his N/ROTC list but weren’t his top N/ROTC program choices.

Also curious if Ivy League programs fill up fast with 1st Board selectees. He’s applying Regular Decision to a few of the Ivies and has applied Early Action to some great state schools. He doesn’t want to *NOT* apply to a few of the Ivies; his mother and I are supportive, as is his guidance counselor.

Do the services attempt to balance the awards so that certain programs aren’t filled to capacity from the 1st Board?

Hope my questions make sense. It’s been 30+ years since I went through my nightmare application process using a wall mounted telephone, a typewriter, and the USPS!

Well he can certainly update his school list. Although I'm no expert I would say the Army tries to spread these scholarships out to achieve desired cadet numbers at each school/program.

Ultimately it's up to your DS but as a father myself I'd just caution again prioritizing any schools where you wouldn't be happy. My advice -- take it for what it's worth -- rank 'em in the order you truly want them and let fate take its course.

For Navy, I think only Embry Riddle and San Diego State filled up last year. I don't think the Ivy's fill up, since most prospective cadets can't get 1500 or higher on the SAT.

For Army, there are so many choices, and much more flexibility, but I don't know that scholarship placement policy. I am sure our resident ROOs will jump in to this thread eventually.

The simplest way is the best. Make the list in order of what schools you want to go to and realistically get into. The services might consider where the scholarship is going somewhat, but it is likely pretty low on the important meter. It is better to pick your schools based on where you want to go.

Moving a scholarship in the NROTC is pretty easy as long as the school has room. If it is full before you are awarded, then there is not much you can do about it anyway other than get on a waiting list and hope somebody changes there mind in going there.

Can confirm this! People change their school all the time, it's very normal.

At the end of the day, prestige of school etc are not nearly as important as what is a right fit for your child :)

I frequently see on this page people try to go to "better schools" do a specific major etc.... at the end of the day just do what you are passionate about, they'll be way more likely to succeed that way!

Also consider what school you/be can afford, should something go south with the scholarship/ROTC (ie academics, medical). We have a current thread dealing with this presently, and every year someone faces this dilemma.

Our unit never got close to filling all possible slots for a class (I think 100 is the max). We'd maybe have 10-15 4/Cs each year if we were lucky. Probably around 15-20 admitted students each year with an NROTC scholarship. Other Ivies were our biggest competition when it came to matriculating students to our school

Is it still possible to change my schools of intent after receiving a National Scholarship?

No need to change the schools of intent on your application after receiving a National Scholarship. Read and follow the communication indicating you are a scholarship winner and transfer the scholarship if necessary.
