Questions for AFTER you Accept an Appointment to a SA

DS has now accepted his appointment to USMMA (yay!!) and we have a few questions:

1) Would it be good to send an email to nominators to let them know that you accepted and say thank you?

2) Should DS send an email to his USNA nominator (district rep who did not nominate him for USMMA) to let him know of the turndown to USNA but acceptance to USMMA?

3) College advisor has instructed DS to withdraw all college acceptances (including one that does not have a reply date till 11/15 for spring 2025 start date) and his two remaining colleges where he is on a waitlist. I really would like to hold off on the waitlist schools and the spring 2025 start school because I am incredibly nervous about an injury between now and I Day (especially because his lax season does not end for a month still). I am also inclined to keep his current top choice school until the 5/1 deadline - again, just in case of an injury. But college advisor has said that this is frowned upon - just not sure she understands that a medical DQ between now and I Day would leave him with zero options for the 2024-25 school year! Any advice on how to keep some sort of plan B alive between now and I Day?

Thanks so much!!

We put down deposits at Plan B school. They can have my $250, it is insurance, in my mind. I feel the same way you do!

Thank you for the reply! My DS’s school is not at all familiar with SAs (I think my son is the first one to ever apply to one!) so I just don’t think they get the risks we face in deleting all plan bs too early. I think I read that there is a part of the common app agreement that says you can’t accept more than one school, so we’re not going to do a deposit but will wait till 5/15 deadline for one school (gets him through most of lax season) then use the spring 2025 acceptance as the new plan b after that till I Day. Thank you for the input!

I'd also keep the options open. We scheduled orientation and filled housing forms for TAMU yesterday after hearing from MOC about his acceptance to USMMA. We will keep the acceptance till I-Day. I think you have the right attitude.
Today, we went over to the neighbors who wrote him LORs for his nomination and informed them of his acceptance to USMMA. He is going to do the rounds at school tomorrow with all his teachers and counselors.

Thank you! I’m still rooting for you for USNA but if it ends up being USMMA we’ll see you there on I Day (and then discard our plan Bs after that!).

Yes, definitely! I am making him read all the USMMA posts so he makes an informed decision when the time comes. The more he reads the more he seems to like USMMA prospects.

My DD is also keeping her acceptance at her Plan B University. She doesn't want to do that, but we were advised that it would be prudent in the event she is injured during basic training. She had an AROTC scholarship that she had to decline, so she reached out to the ROTC contact at her Plan B University and explained it in an email. The contact wished her the best of luck at West Point and instructed her what to do, but was not at all discouraging of her keeping her acceptance there. He even told her that she would be welcome to join ROTC at Plan B University even if she was injured during basic training at West Point. Obviously, she doesn't want that to happen, but she was glad to know it was a backup plan.

Thank you for this! So helpful to hear the ROTC contact told her to keep the acceptance - going to tell DS’s counselor that info. Congrats and good luck at West Point!

Keeping plan B a option until later is a good idea. Loss of deposits is a cheap price to pay for the insurance to be able to confirm college next year no matter what. In regards to ROTC scholarship confirmation. All should be aware that though a ROTC unit says "you are welcome at the unit if the SA doesn't work out or you are injured" does not mean that the scholarship will be contracted no matter what. Navy requires NSI in summer for scholarship to kick in. Army requires passing the physical fitness test to contract and kick in that scholarship.

Not trying to burst any bubbles about plan B. Its good to keep the options open, but just be careful to assume that if you get injured at a SA that the Scholarship will still apply no matter what. Major injuries that might stop you at a SA may also stop you at a ROTC unit.
