NAPS Waitlisted

Oh of course definitely dependent on the person. I was saying that as I did much better when I did a PRT opposed to CFA. And the standards do differ whether someone is male or female obviously which does make it harder as well. But it’s nothing that isn’t attainable with practice.
PRT at NAPS: 1.5 Mile run, plank and cadence pushups. No BASKETBALL throw!!! ;)

I think you can probably walk 1.5 miles in less than 12:40!
Exactly. My knees have been bothering me lately (doing too much weight too fast), so I’ve been taking it slower while working out, and I still could run 1.5 miles in under 12.40. Unfortunately though there were a good number of girls at NAPS this year that’s didn’t pass the PRT

Uh, that's 8:30/mile pace for the ladies ......... Go ahead and try to walk that fast ......

(For perspective, my son made Indoor Track Nationals for the mile race walk twice while in H.S., and qualified around the 9:00 for the mile time both years).

Men have to run 7:00/mile pace at the Academy.

With that said, I do not know if NAPS still follows fleet standards based upon age, which are lower than the Academy standard.

I thought USNA was 8:15 to max the 1.5 mile run.

For ensigns, I believe the max is 8:30.

My son never maxed the PRT - he was training long distance running at USNA. His last PRT he took recently he maxed all the events - trained for the shorter distance this time.

Thank you. Changing gears and planning for a whole different college experience/dorm/meal plan and then getting an email for NAPS…..whew, I’m trying to just roll with it. My DS is definitely more go with the flow than I am 😝
Were you on the NAPS waitlist?

Do they get another chance to pass it? Time is running out for them. I hope they don't just push them through.

"The mission of the US Naval Academy is to develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character, to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."

They have 3 chances during their entire time at NAPS. I’m not 100% positive on this, but you HAVE TO pass the last PRT. If you don’t, then you don’t matriculate. There was a girl last year that failed the last PRT and didn’t matriculate on to USNA. It is quite fair as the PRT isn’t impossible, it just takes some practice. And if you can’t pass that at least the last time out of the three times, that shows that either, 1. You didn’t want it bad enough, and 2. Maybe the military isn’t for you if you can’t pass something like the PRT.

Passing the PRT seems like the easiest condition to meet at NAPS. If you can't pass it after 10 months, you shouldn't be able to go on to USNA.

How can you lead sailors and make sure they are meeting expectations and requirements if you can't meet them yourself?

The PRT is not easier than the CFA. But I suppose that is up to each person. The standard is higher on the PRT than the CFA. Prospective M/C can google USNA PRT standards.
Agreed - I think the NAPSters it’s “easy” for are fast, efficient runners already over the required Navy PRT distance, and are adept at push-ups and planks. It might be “easier” because there is no basketball throw, shuttle run or pull-ups in a timed sequence of events designed to fatigue - but the run times trip up many.

Every year, midshipmen are separated because they cannot pass the PRT, even after being given remedial instruction and retries.

I agree, and it’s the same for NAPS, MAPS, and USAFAPS. It is also the same for all academy’s as each year you’re required to pass a fitness test, or you might be dis enrolled. NAPS does mandatory PE periods in order to try and help those who didn’t pass the PRT. So in the end is has to be up to the M/C or C/C to fail. At the end of the day, service academies shouldn’t be looked at as “normal colleges” as their primary job is to get you ready for a career as an officer, hence their standards for physical fitness requirements.

I just hope they don't just let them slide on to the Academy if they don't genuinely pass.

Note that those passing times: 10:30 for males and 12:40 for females are the LOWEST D grade. The PRT grades do affect class standing which does in turn affect many other things. It really pays to do significantly better so that the grades are A's or B's as opposed to C's or D's.
NOTE: I do not have the break points for each grade. Also note that the vast majority of Phys Ed at USNA is TESTED/GRADED and affects your
class rank. Swimming, Boxing, etc. . .
