Hey, everyone, I’m just here sort to explain a weird and frustrating time that I'm undergoing with DODMERB.

In a previous post, I recently mentioned that I am very fortunate enough to be offered a conditional offer to both USAFA and USNA’s prep school and an NROTC scholarship.

The process of applying to the academies was relatively good, including the interviews. I was fortunate enough even to have a nomination from my district representative. That's until now.

Not long ago, I saw on DODMERB, I was disqualified for the following:

D271.40:History of acute allergic reaction to fish, crustaceans, shellfish, peanuts, or tree nuts
D241.30:Asthma/reactive airway disease/exercise-induced bronchospasm after age 13
D156.99:Miscellaneous disqualification for eye/vision history of toxoplasmosis chorioretinitis in the right eye requiring follow-up in six months

I'll explain a few things from these disqualifications. First and foremost, my allergies; I recently obtained a few tests just to verify once more if I had these allergies. It turns out I'm not allergic to peanuts and tree nuts; however, shellfish did come out positive. More specifically I'm allergic to shrimp but not as bad for me to carry any EpiPen or have my allergy activated when I'm close or smell, etc.

Second, my other disqualification as per DODMERB was because I was given an inhaler just because my doctor likes to give me one just in case. I tried emailing them about this and I have conducted an asthma test with my allergist I never had any issues with my asthma since I was roughly 8–10 years old. In fact, for some background, I enjoy recreational running I was even on my school cross-country team and I was among the best runner on the team.

Third, throughout the summer of 2023’. Oddly enough, right after I came back from the summer seminar, I was treated for toxoplasmosis. Thanks to God, it was not serious and after treatment, my eyes remained safe and healthy, and today I still have perfect vision. I have emailed DODMERB, explaining that my follow-up is more of a routine checkup that I've had ever since I’ve had it and it's just for the doctor to check up on my eye but again, until now, the toxo has been deactivated.

This is a weird and honestly very nerve-wracking situation and I guess I'm asking for advice that anyone has. I am undergoing a waiver process by all the academies which is pretty good. But does anyone recommend any other actions I can take to strengthen my case further?

You will have to work through the process as required by each waiver authority. Watch emails, provide information in a timely manner.

And HAVE A BACK UP PLAN should the ultimate outcome be no waiver. Everyone should have a back up plan.
