CGAS appointment notification

Yes, and coaches or AO can call. We got a coach call, portal was updated that same night.
Thanks. Not sure the email clicks as it says cga scholar appointment for AEP invite. I don’t see my candidate needs CGAS for academic preparation.

If your child's goal is to attend CGA, then if they get a CGAS appointment they should 100% take it. Yes, it is an extra year, but in the long run, that one year is not a big deal. And many kids, who were high achievers in high school, still struggle at the Academy with the academic requirements, military requirements, and athletics. This year CGA cut down the number of credits that 4/c cadets take, at least in the first semester, to ease the transition, but it is still a shock to many. Your child might do fine, but they should still welcome a chance to spend a year at one of the prep schools. It will give them a chance to prove they can excel, and as long as they meet the requirements, they are guaranteed a spot in the next year's CGA class if they reapply. Each year about 65-70 swabs in the incoming class are from the previous year's CGAS appointments. Those students are looked to as leaders since they already have a year under their belts and are more familiar with all the military requirements. In addition, those who have a year at CGAS may be more likely to be able to validate out of some of the core required classes, freeing up space for more electives later on.

And I know you simply said you didn't think your candidate needing CGAS for academic preparation, and didn't say they wouldn't take it if that is what they were offered. But I thought it was a good opportunity to post a bit of info about CGAS. Good luck to your child either way.

Thank you for your reply. You made excellent points about CGAS and well received from my end. Just to clarify, we don’t have any formal offer but just a letter saying the AEP offer with CGAS appointment. It is very confusing since there has been no other communication except this email. I agreed with merits you mentioned about CGAS. Lets say, my other kid is In the fleet currently so I know all the struggles kids have at CGA through the four years. I do remember the super swab was from CGAS. It is not my decision at the end but without giving out too much details, I just know my kid is competitive academically.

@dberkeley, Can you clarify your note above ref the invite letter you received for AEP? Did you receive an invite to AEP that also states an offer/acceptance to CGAS prior to receiving an official notification from your AO?

Received an email with the first sentence saying “congratulations for appointment to CGAS”. The rest is about AEP. Nothing else.

My DS received this yesterday, too. CGAS, but invite to AEP which appears to be only for full appointments. He called admissions and was told his name was on the list that he received an appointment and they person on the line congratulated him saying he had one to the Academy. But we told them this is the first he'd heard anything. Nothing so far in Bear's Den. They said it might be a typo?? Here's what it said:

Congratulations on your appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program! We would like to invite you to the Academy Experience Program (AEP), an event exclusively for appointees and their families. During AEP you will:

  • Pair up with a cadet host for an overnight visit;
  • Prepare for Swab Summer;
  • Explore leadership development opportunities;
  • Tour academic facilities and meet faculty in your major;
  • Discover athletic, music, and club programs; and
  • Meet future classmates
AEP will be held on the following dates, click below to learn more & register:

Exactly the same letter. No update in portal. We received nice BFE and conditional appointment email before when my older one was appointed in December. My older one laughed off about this when told yesterday. Congratulations to your son! Go bear!

It certainly sounds good, but call Admission to clarify. Email mistakes have been made before and they will again, so rather than assume anything just have your DS drop a dime and see what's really going on.

I mean, by definition, "Academy Experience Program" is just as applicable to a CGAS appointment as a regular appointment. It's not uncommon for communications to get a bit out of order in this process and usually there is a couple day delay between first hint of an appointment and the official update in Bear's Den.

Not sure if anything has changed from last year and years prior, but in order to get the BFE, you needed to first get the appointment in the portal, and then click a link and declare your intentions to accept. Only then would they send the BFE with the cool appointment folder and other paperwork. Regardless of any of that, huge congrats to both of your kids!!

Thanks for the update/insight. We received the same but looking to clarify since the language appears a bit contradictory between CGAS and CGA appointment.

Just make sure I understand, for CGAS appointment, it is also called direct appointee ?since the AEP links to the page “Academy Experience Program(AEP) for Direct Appointees #4”?

I also received the correction email as well as a phone call, but no update in my portal yet! Has anyone's portal been updated yet?
