Apparently Med School through USUHS is available to CG Officers now (not cadets)

Oh I'm probably familiar with that person...but this is for an MD. Much more interesting. I guess it's only limited to PCP though for residency. I have a few classmates who went onto med school with their GI Bills. More freedom to choose your residency that way...

VET TEC was sadly nixed recently

DD just let us know she will be resigning after ADSO

Happy to hear. Additionally, did she go through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge program? Highly recommend that she looks into filing a claim with the VA. Even having a VA rating of 10% is helpful for different benefits. She earned them

Apparently Med School through USUHS is available to CG Officers now (not cadets)

This may be old news, but recently learned that CG JO's in the ranks of O1-O3 may apply to USUHS and attend medical school. This isn't available to cadets. I have no interest in being a physician, but maybe this is helpful information to someone out there...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Good insights on all and your previous comments. I'll detail some of my career path below. I was an EE major at the Academy. I would have done the cyber systems major personally as well if it was around. I enjoyed the CS portion of the computer systems track, but did not like all of the signal...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

I"m interested to know the promotability of those who go direct to Cyber billets. I didn't particularly enjoy my DWO tour, but there was so much value i got out of it even now. Sea stories, knowing what annoys me/what doesn't, seeing cool places.

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Nah. Sectors do operational jobs. Maritime prevention and response. Say inspecting incoming ships. Coordinating rescue centers for shore based SAR or responding to oil spills, natural disasters. Things of that nature

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Was underway on a white hull ship. Did a lot of drug busts, migrant interdictions, and a handful of SAR cases. Went to a busy Sector and served as an intelligence officer. Worked with lots of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and the intelligence community. Got out at five...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Sped run through it while working...looks like no one went to a Sector at all this year. Seems like everyone got a great assignment

So this is what getting old feels like...10 years later. Excited for the cadets. Go Bears, Go Billets

    Dating at the academy

I'm an alum. Seen a lot of divorces from cadet-cadet/academy grad-academy grad relationships. Especially that first underway tour. Who wants the ol' flight deck relationship where you wave at each other as one pulls into port, and the other is headed down range. And don't be so closed-minded...

    Dating at the academy

Don't date another cadet when you've got a whole college of normal women across the campus

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

This is true. I think most people who've served have had some sort of health impact from service. The inconsistent sleep schedules that come from standing watches and deployments certainly causes down stream health issues. You were underway yourself, you know all of the exposure that comes...

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

Nothing wrong with entitlement. Post 9/11 GI Bill, VA Home Loan, VA health care, etc. are all earned entitlements. I really don't care if someone who never served is envious of those benefits. Just a part of the deal when we serve

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

Ah I see, looks like it's about 2700 for an O1. Not bad at all, especially with roommates and being underway for a good amount of time.

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

For sure. The RMC calculator accounts for that. Simple math would be to multiply BAH/BAS by 1.25 to account for the fact that it is tax free

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

An earned entitlement and benefit should not be conflated with privilege. Historically, service members were discriminated against due to Vietnam hate. We certainly are in a better position now thanks to that course correction. Envy from earned entitlement will happen. Everyone is free to...

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

Regular Military Compensation Calculator 2023-2024 Tax Brackets & Federal Income Tax Rates The RMC is a good way to gauge on the approximate amount of an equivalent civilian salary. The tax free allowances mean that service members are in a lower tax bracket than their civilian counterparts...

Are Academy grads/cadets/mids privileged for their "free" education?

I agree with all of you, for the record. Yes, we were fortunate that we were accepted to the Academy. That also came with earning our spots through academics, athletics, and standardized test scores. Congressional nominations for 4/5 of the Service Academies. Perhaps some grads, cadets, and...

Was having this discussion with another grad recently. What are your thoughts?
