Tesla or EV auto anyone?

My buddy is a car guy and has a Tesla now. Lots of fun to drive, he saves money over the aggressive V8 car he used to have, but the biggest thing he's noticed in three years or so is that there's been essentially no maintenance. You don't change oil, for example, and those types of savings add up. He's no tree hugger but he likes it. The one thing he's down on is the pronounced loss of range in extreme weather. He moved from MN to CO, which helped, but his range is still not great in the winter.

I am holding back until things take another step forward in the range category. Since Christmas I've taken driving trips from MN to Brownsville, TX, out to USCGA in CT, down to Omaha, back down to Texas, we flew down to Florida and drove 1400 miles that week, and I just flew back from dropping a car off for my DD at CGA this weekend. And it's a 420 mile round trip to the lake in the summer. I drive a lot and I want some serious range in my life. I don't commute to work any more, but there are still a lot of very short, battery friendly trips in my life as well and there's no reason on earth that I wouldn't go electric. Back when I had to round trip it to the office I had a Hertz rental return that got 35MPG because I am utterly not a car guy. I'm all about the practical. That said, if something fun like the Ford Ranger came in a hybrid in the next 4-6 years I'd take a hard look.
