Hi I am a student from New York and I have completed everything needed to get an advanced regents diploma except for taking my Checkpoint B Regents French Exam (but I had a 98 in the course) as I was at USNA Summer Stem camp during regents week. I now need to decide if I want the advanced diploma vs the regular one because the academy can see I did all the necessary courses besides the one last final but I no longer take french and I think that if I took the test this year I would probably pass but do bad and I’m not sure If I want that on my transcript. Any advice?

Mom advice would be the same as @justme. Set yourself up for your best success, overall, beyond only USNA. I cringe when students make choices they really don’t want to, all in the name of an appointment. Bc an appointment may not be in the cards for them.

Additionally, USNA is a STEM school. Those are the grades that will have the most impact on that part of your application. Imo.

Just be advised that the "regents test" and "regents diploma" are very local to NY state and really not something that
has a lot of sway outside NY. Growing up and seeing relatives go through the process and then learning more from
my wife's godfather who was a senior person IN the NY State Board of Regents certainly showed me what it means
and what it takes BUT, the other 49 states don't do it that way.
I do not think that it will matter at all to the vast majority of civilian schools or for that matter to USNA. That said,
what would it take to do well on the test as in what would you need to give up/miss? If we're talking about a few weeks
of a few hours of study per day, I'd suggest taking it.

Exactly this.

I don’t think my son even mentioned his regents stuff.

The regents diploma is given after offers of appointment are given anyway. My son got his after induction.

Okay thanks so much, I wouldn’t miss anything but I would have to relearn a language (I’ve completely forgotten) to take it and I think having that low grade will look very bad. I think I will just not take the test I don’t think it is worth the risk.

NY appointee here,

the different regents are based off course load and work iirc. The highest one requiring 3 years of language and advance math if I’m correct.

Just aim to have as much “hard” and competitive classes you can get! I don’t think the “type” of diploma you receive matters, since it’s reflected in your coursework already!!
