I have a few questions related to NROTC Marine option.

1) Am I competing for a scholarship with incoming freshman at each university or across the nation? (Would it be beneficial to list a college higher on preference list where my academics and SAT may be in the higher percentiles over a more competitive school to raise chances of scholarship?)

2) What should I focus the most on this summer-Continue expanding leadership commitment/depth or raising SAT score? (Currently 1410 highest with 1450 superstore)

3)Tips to get to 20+ Pull ups? (I've been stuck at 15/16 range for a few weeks)

4) How early should I plan on submitting my application?

Thank you for taking time to read this. I look forward to your feedback!

1). MO scholarship is National, but I believe decision boards are regional.
2). Increase both. You want to present the best application you can
3) Best way to get better at pull-up is do more pull ups. More reps, more sets…rinse and repeat
4) see number 2. It is best to present the best app you can. If it takes alittle longer. It will be worth it

You definitely need to try to get as close to the max score for the physical fitness test as possible. Yes, definitely try to max the pull ups. Also put a lot of focus on the run to prepare for that.

I think your SAT scores are good. If you need to choose between leadership or SAT improvement this summer, I think leadership would be more important for the NROTC-MO application.

These are just my opinions based on my son’s experience going through the process a few years ago. (He received the scholarship.). Like someone said above, your decision board is regional to your area, so you may want to ask someone in your area who knows about how your region conducts the process.

If you can submit your strongest application early enough to be considered for the first board, that is ideal to give you the best chance at receiving a scholarship. But it is more important to submit your strongest application than just to get it in early.

Thank you! I will definitely start putting a stronger emphasis on pull ups in my workouts.

I've run XC for a few years so I should be able to max the run as well. I also heard that a factor is how your standing is at your local recruiting office. Is it best to contact my local recruiter and get involved in PT sessions or to contact my NROTC Coordinator? Thanks!

Yes, get to know your OSO (Officer Selection Officer), but if you live far away from him, then get to know the local Marine recruiter NCOs.

For pull-ups, buy a pull-up belt and use a 25lb weight.

Hey MO recipient here.

1) Yes you will comepte against other 12th graders/incoming freshman. It's a national scholarship, but you are selected regionally, and then those are sent to MCRC (In Quantico?) for final selection. Look up like "USMC Recruit Districting" or something to that effect to see which one you are in

2) Your SAT is fine. I got it with much lower, so your 1410 is great. The minimum score is 1000 combined. So I would recommend doing leadership, because at the end of the day they are screening you for leadership potential and aptitude for military service. Apply for Boys/Girls State, if your in JROTC there is no shortage of programs during the summer. There is always something to do. My recommendation would be find somehwere where YOU actually LEAD other PEOPLE. Not just a leadership seminar or what not. They like to ask in the interviews for examples of leadership, and it would be to your benefit to have one on hand that is recent.

3) I was a XC/TF guy for 8 years, so running was always my thing. Now that goes on the back burner and upper body is what counts. I heard someone tell me once "80% of being a Marine is looking good in uniform and doing pulls ups" haha. So what I have done recently is the reverse pyramid method. Basically do a pull up, rest one min, then do two. Keep going till you max, then go down. Ex 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. That got me from 0 to 16 ish in about 3 months. Now seeing as you are already there, you will probably get up to 20+ fairly quickly. It the most effective method I have tried so far.

4) GET ON THE EARLY BOARD. There is literally no reason to not be on the early board. They meet in December, which means a) you hear back sooner, get your physical done sooner, get your NSI assinment sooner, get that peace of mind sooner, and b) should you not make the first board, they roll you back to the Feb board. Second boarder do not get the luxrry of a "twice-over".
In terms of actual dates, the application is open now. You can fill that out whenever, but I wouldn't do all of it now. You will need letters of rec, transcripts, and time to write essays. All that usually comes after the school year has finished. I turned mine in in August. When you turn it in you reach out to your coordinator which is usually the RS XO or the OSO. Then in like Sept-Oct, you do a day where everyone does a PFT and the interviews, with notification of selection around December.

Best of luck and feel free to shoot me a pm with any questions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share all this useful information. I really appreciate it!

Don't game the school choice. Put down your real preferences. Google sandgram marine scholarship. Sandgram lays out what you need to do or rather be.
