Slightly off topic but while doing his team capstone at USNA, it came up over and over again that he could weld and fabricate and do mechanical repairs and troubleshooting. Growing up in a rural area with a MacGyver dad sure helped. DS built his own forge and pneumatic hammer for blacksmithing...
Echoing what @OldRetSWO said.
Summer programs are part of USNA's strategic outreach (In BGO training, all summer programs are in the strategic outreach chapter). Attending or not attending has no bearing on potential applicant admission. Between plebe summer, multiple sport camps, STEM, NASS...
Control what you can. Absolutely nail the tests and classes you can. Practice and prepare for interviews. Be you. The only you that you can be when you write statements and essays.
For the most part, the rest is somewhat of a roll of the dice. No one knows the competition of your slate each...
Networking. Spending legit authentic time with aviation mentors.
Keep your order of merit up, applying for and doing summer trainings like Powered Flight, showing up for briefings and seminars detailing navy aviation options.
Make sure that you have shown the powers that be that naval aviation...
Also, in a nod to @Capt MJ who has brought up Schrödinger’s cat more than once. Two things can be true simultaneously. There can be attentive, professional BGOs, and sadly, there can be some (hopefully few) who aren’t quite up to par.
My official AC happens to be TDY so two senior BGOs are filling that role. They are awesome. They reach out to us at various points of the cycle to remind us of things that may need to be done.
I have responded to requests from parents to talk. Yes, as a BGO my primary focus is the candidate...
Our AZ USNA Parent Club is hosting Our Welcome Aboard luncheon and it will be on Saturday, June 15 at 11:30am at Seasons 52 in Scottsdale. Join our parent club to receive invites and links.
This is an awesome event. And we would love to welcome you and your family into the USNA AZ family...
I could be wrong, it's happened once before ;). Honestly, about 3 years ago I decided to just have him tell me things when he felt like it, I can barely keep up with my own schedule, his is crazy, I don't have time for that!!! :)
Love seeing these appointments, and to all AZ appointees, reach out to the parent club. For a state with no ocean front property they have a very supportive group of parents, current midshipmen and alumnus.
DS and two fellow soon to be ensigns signed their lease for NPS in Monterey. Super relieved to have that done and arranged. The logistics are in full swing navigating moving out, packing, cross country trip, commissioning week etc.
Exciting times for sure.
Apparently the presentation of their capstone was a success. Exciting stuff. Another milestone checked. Love the days I get the super happy, positive, reflective calls.
It is! The capstone was a big multi day deal. And it was a huge success. That has weighed heavily on him and their team and now they can celebrate. The video is awesome. Listening to them wish, hope, beg, and then scream success was so cool. After that 32 week project commissioning may seem like...
Mine finished capstone with his team this weekend and yesterday. From what I understand they got company email to show up in SEL office to get tickets. Early this am.
He did confirm with me he got the number we would need for general seating. One more step closer to this thing I just cannot...
I’m trying to get a few sundresses that will meet garden party, awards night, baccalaureate, commissioning day in order. Thank goodness for Amazon try before you buy. I don’t want burnt shoulders or knees.
Found out about a surprise guest that has just made my heart so happy. Major job change...
Our DS Plan A v1 was Norwich. They covered all expenses not covered by his NROTC Tier 1 scholarship based on an academic award. Birthplace of ROTC. Great community and alumnus network for sure. And to be honest the best relationship and communication he had amongst all of his options.
